Saw the new Star Trek movie yesterday. I hadn't known it was a prequel to the whole TV series, but that made it even better. It was great to get to know the characters as young people. For one, I didn't know why Bones was called that, or what was Uhura's first name. When young Mr. Chekhov yelled a nice little obscenity in Russian, the whole theater exploded in laughter. I won't tell you what it is. Go see it. 5/5 on the wildernesscat scale.
Finally watched the so-much-talked-about Russian movie Stilyagi (a.k.a. Boogie Bones). A very stylish musical, a bit like Hair, also with a political background and a love story, lots of color, and nostalgia for the 50s. I am sure I missed some of the "shared background" that my Russian friends experienced while watching it, but frankly speaking, not one of them was alive back then. So I'm not that disadvantaged :) Now the only thing I need, is some English subtitles to go with the film, so I can watch it again with the missus. She loves Hair, so she's bound to enjoy this one. All my searches returned empty. Help, anyone?
Saw the movie the other night. My sister-in-law warned me that it has leftist motives, but I don't agree. It's definitely pacifistic in nature, and gives a glimpse into the insane nature of the first war in Lebanon. People are disoriented. They are overconfident one moment, and totally lost a moment later. Lots of surrealistic scenes, for example when Israeli dead and wounded soldiers are treated as one pile that needs to be dumped somewhere, so they can be treated. The only thing that got on my nerves was the sound quality. Some of the characters mumble sentences that are completely incomprehensible. Maybe subtitles would come in handy. All in all, worth watching.
Saw the most incredibly stupid movie You don't mess with the Zohan. What a bunch of crap. It's not funny, it's obscene without having Borat's charm, it mocks both Arabs and Israelis in a moronic way, it does not keep a good steady pace of events, and Adam Sandler's wannabee Israeli accent is annoying. In short, a total waste of our time. I didn't even have the missus's luck to fall asleep in the middle of it. If you really must see it, look here for an eMule link (Hebrew subtitles, first in list).
Saw the Oscar-award-winning movie "No Country for Old Men". What a pile of horse shit. There are too many characters, the plot is a tangled mess, and the dialogs are plain silly. But yeah, there's plenty of blood and senseless killing, that's for sure. At first I thought I recognized a familiar face in that Anton psychopathic-killer dude (I thought he was Robert from "Everybody Loves Raymond"), but even that turned out to be wrong. In short - a big disappointment. Don't go see it if you have better things to do with your time.
